Andrea H. Brand Is Among This Year鈥檚 120 New Members
, chair of the at 91制片厂 Grossman School of Medicine, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
The academy, established under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and provides policy advice to the federal government and other organizations. This year鈥檚 election includes 120 new members and 25 international members, who were chosen 鈥渋n recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research,鈥 the organization announced last week.
Dr. Brand, also the Frederick L. Ehrman Professor of Cell Biology, studies nervous system development, identifying the genes that direct the specific behaviors of particular neurological cells鈥攏eurons and glia鈥攑roduced by neural stem cells. Also a professor in 91制片厂 Langone Health鈥檚 , she studies the genes that regulate the transition from a neural stem cell to a specialized neuronal or glial cell type鈥攔esearch with the long-term aim of repairing or regenerating the nervous system after injury or disease.鈥
